A significant development has emerged for candidates preparing for the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2026. The Central Government's Department of Personnel and Training has released the service-wise breakdown of the 933 vacancies to be filled for the Civil Services Examination 2026. This year, the number of posts in the All India Services and Central Services is lower than last year. The Civil Services Examination will select officers for the Indian Administrative Service, Indian Police Service, and Indian Foreign Service, along with several Group A and B services. The Civil Services Preliminary Examination will be held on 24 May 2026.

Furthermore, 40 posts have been allocated for the IFS, of which 16 are unreserved, 6 for SC, 3 for ST, 11 for OBC, and 4 for the EWS category. Furthermore, there are 94 vacancies in the Indian Revenue Service and 180 in the IRS. The remaining central services have a total of 933 vacancies.
What is the category-wise breakdown of total posts?
According to the UPSC, out of a total of 933 posts, category-wise, 397 are reserved for unreserved candidates, 243 for OBC, 133 for SC, 72 for ST, and 88 for EWS. A total of 33 posts are reserved for candidates with disabilities.
How is the UPSC selection process conducted?
The Civil Services Examination is conducted in three stages. First, there is the Prelims, and successful candidates are called for the Mains. Successful candidates in the Mains then appear for an interview. The final merit list is prepared based on performance in the 1750 marks of the Mains and 275 marks of the interview.
Face Authentication Will Also Be Required From 2026
From 2026, authentication at the examination center will be mandatory for all UPSC examinations, including the Civil Services. Candidates will be identified using artificial intelligence to prevent fraudulent candidates. Additionally, the new system will allow individuals with disabilities to choose their preferred exam center. UPSC has also reduced the time period for submitting objections to question papers and answer keys from seven to five days. Candidates will now be required to submit their objections within five days after the prelims. According to the new provisions, candidates already serving in IAS or IFS positions will not be able to appear in the UPSC 2026 exam.
