Rabri Devi, a prominent leader of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), claimed on Saturday that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is attempting to force Nitish Kumar out of Bihar. She emphasized that after filing his nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections, Kumar should not leave the state. According to her, this situation is not a voluntary retirement but rather a strategic maneuver by the BJP, which, following a significant victory in the 2025 elections, appears to be eyeing the chief minister's position for itself. She stated that the BJP is trying to push Kumar out of Bihar, suggesting that he is losing his grip on reality.
Her remarks come amid significant political changes in Bihar, as Nitish Kumar submitted his nomination for the Rajya Sabha in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday. Alongside Kumar, other candidates from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), including Upendra Kushwaha and Bihar BJP President Nitin Nabin, have also filed their nominations. Nitish Kumar, who has served as Bihar's chief minister for over two decades, has already announced his intention to join the Rajya Sabha and participate in the current elections. The 75-year-old leader assured that he would fully support the new cabinet.
In a post on X, Kumar expressed his desire to become a member of the Rajya Sabha in the upcoming elections. He reassured his constituents of his ongoing commitment to work together for the development of Bihar. He pledged his complete support and guidance to the new government. Voting for the upcoming biennial Rajya Sabha elections, which will fill 37 seats from ten states, is scheduled for March 16, with counting set to begin at 5 PM on the same day.
According to a press release, the terms of 37 members elected from Maharashtra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Telangana will end in April, creating vacancies for new members. Meanwhile, the political shift also indicates a generational change within the Janata Dal (United). Nitish Kumar's son, Nishant Kumar, is set to formally join the party on Sunday. He held a meeting with senior leaders and young legislators at the residence of JD(U) National Executive President Sanjay Kumar Jha on Saturday.
