Things happen in Konkan that are beyond imagination. The beauty of the mind of the people and the beauty of the nature here are very mesmerizing. The magnanimity of the people here is reserved even for ghosts. Because in Chinder village in Konkan even today people vacate the village once in 3 years for three days, it is for ghosts! During these three days no one wanders in the village of Chinder, because for these three days the village is completely open in the name of ghosts and this permission has been given by Rawal Nath, the guardian of Tal Konkan himself.
There is a legend behind this! It is said that around four hundred years ago, a pair of maternal uncle and niece came to the village of Chinder in search of a place to live. While wandering in that forest, he felt the image of the company of thousands of people in the neighborhood even though there was no one there. Wandering in the wilderness, they stopped in the courtyard of a hut, and a tiger came out of that hut. The tiger suddenly attacked both of them. Then a divine woman came out of that hut. That woman was none other than the village deity of Chinder village, Ai Pavnai. This Adimaya with a trident in his hand calmed the tiger. Then both the wanderers told their grief to the mother and asked to stay in the village. The mother said, “There is a wild boar (a demon full of evil powers) in this village. It damages the farm. It swallows both the pet and its guardian. If you want to live here, you have to destroy that asura.” Then they both wander in the forest and find the wild boar and kill it. Just as that demon is killed, thousands of souls from the vicinity of that village come and stand in front of them both, at the same time Mother Pavnai also appears there. The spirit says that he owns the village and wants to live in it. At the same time the people of the village are also present there. What exactly should we do to the village god? Ghosts or humans? This leads to confusion and Rawal Nath is called to mediate. Rawal Nath reasoned that people will live in this village for 3 years. But after those 3 years they have to vacate the village for the next 3 days and for those 3 days the village will be completely ruled by ghosts and spirits. But after 3 days, the village will be open for humans again and ghosts will have to leave this village. This cycle will continue every 3 years.
Today there is a stone of that uncle’s niece in the Pavnai Devi temple in Chinder village. Even today, that village is evacuated for three days every three years and it is forbidden to visit this village during these three days.
