Carrots are a kitchen staple used in everything from salads to bolognese, but they often spoil faster than expected, just like bananas. Luckily, waste management experts at Wheeldon Brothers have shared the best ways to storevegetables, helping keep carrots fresh for one month.

A spokesperson for the company said: "Carrots are one of the most commonly wasted vegetables in the UK. The good news is that with proper storage techniques, they can last for weeks rather than days." While the fridge is the most common place to store carrots, they can also be stored on the side.

The experts said: "Room temperature storage can work well as long as you keep carrots away from heat sources.

"Don't wash them before storing-that can remove the protective skin and make them spoil faster."

Using a sealed container can again help to slow the dehydration process. But it is important to regularly check the batch and remove any that are starting to soften or are not, as spoilage can spread quickly.

The experts added: "With the right conditions, carrots can stay fresh for up to a month at room temperature.

"It's all about maintaining the right balance of moisture and keeping them in a stable environment."

It's also important to remove the leaves from a carrot if you buy it with them still on. The pro noted: "Left untouched, the leafy tops act like a wick, pulling moisture out of the carrot.

"It's one of the quickest ways to ruin an otherwise fresh bunch."

If you prefer to keep your carrots in the fridge, place them in an airtight container or a sealed bag, then put them in the crisper drawer.

Alternatively, submerging them in a jar of water and refreshing it every few days can also help to retain moisture.

Make sure to cut the green tops of the carrots if you're storing them in the fridge, too.

The experts added: "Reducing food waste starts with simple, everyday habits. Something as basic as proper carrot storage can make a real difference."
