Co-created by Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses, the new series Rooster stars Steve Carell as a character who often finds himself in awkward situations. This role may remind audiences of his iconic character, Michael Scott, from the beloved NBC show The Office. In Rooster, Carell portrays Greg Russo, an author who has never attended college and spends time with his daughter Katie (Charly Clive), who teaches at Ludlow College. Carell noted that while he has recently appeared in comedies like Space Force, Rooster brought back memories of The Office. During a press conference, he shared insights about the show's cast dynamics and his expectations for its success.
In a virtual press conference, Carell discussed his character, Greg Russo, who is affectionately known as the Rooster. Russo has authored a series of books featuring a character named Rooster, whom he aspires to emulate. Carell emphasized, “I didn’t want him to be a loser who lacks everything that Rooster possesses. He’s a confident individual, not a caricature.”
The ten-episode series follows Russo as he navigates life post-divorce while trying to reconnect with his daughter, who is dealing with her own marital issues. Her husband, Archie (Phil Dunster), is involved with his graduate student, Sunny (Lauren Tsai). Carell expressed his belief that Rooster would be a standout series, stating, “It reminds me of my time on The Office in terms of the ensemble cast, where every role was equally important. We were a team, including the cast, crew, writers, and producers, all striving for excellence.”
He further elaborated, “You can have all the best elements—great writing, talented people—but you never know how it will turn out. However, the camaraderie and joy we shared during filming were palpable, and that was crucial. If the show turns out to be a hit, that’s just a bonus. It was creatively fulfilling, and the dedication to the project was evident.”
Carell also mentioned that he doesn’t actively seek out roles that are drastically different from his past characters. “It’s more about the people I want to collaborate with and the creators I admire. I have great respect for Bill and Matt, and when they reached out, I felt it could be something truly special. Working with talented actors is what excites me the most,” he remarked.
