Local authorities received the alarm around 7:40 p.m. on March 9, at the address of 1525 King Highway, where Kalamazoo Metal Recyclers operates. Zach Hamelton, a spokesperson for public safety, indicated that the fire was primarily contained to an outdoor pile of materials. Fortunately, the flames did not spread to any buildings within the recycling center as crews worked diligently to extinguish the fire.

However, the fire produced significant black smoke visible from various locations near King Highway. Witnesses reported seeing smoke rising prominently above the industrial area, raising concerns among local residents and drivers in the vicinity.

As the fire unfolded, numerous images and videos showcasing the thick smoke circulated on social media, shared by onlookers and local residents. Some clips depicted dark smoke rising from the recycling yard while firefighters worked to control the situation. Despite the alarming visuals, officials confirmed that the fire remained contained within the facility's premises. Traffic on King Highway continued to flow as emergency teams carried out their operations. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage to nearby properties. Investigators are set to determine the fire's cause once the area is secured, while emergency responders remain on-site to ensure the fire is fully extinguished.
