To make digital payments simple and convenient in India, PhonePe has launched the new ‘RuPay On-The-Go’ smart card. This card is specifically designed for transit payments, allowing users to make instant payments on services like bus, metro, train, toll and parking, even without internet connectivity.
It is an NCMC (National Common Mobility Card) based smart card, in which the balance is stored directly on the card’s chip. This means that no internet or network is required to make payments.
A maximum balance of up to ₹2,000 can be loaded on this card.
The service is initially available in Hyderabad Metro, where the card can be purchased from the ticket counter and activated by OTP. After this, it will be gradually implemented in other transit networks of the country also.
Although this card is currently issued in Hyderabad, it is completely interoperable. That means it can be used and recharged at any NCMC-enabled station in India. PhonePe says the move is the first effort towards connecting the digital wallet ecosystem to public transport at a national level.
