
Balendra Shah will take oath as Prime Minister on March 27 after the landslide victory of Rashtriya Swatantra Party (RSP) in Nepal. A day before this, on March 26, the MPs will be sworn in. Let us tell you that in the House of Representatives elections held on March 5, RSP has achieved a clear majority by winning 182 seats. RSP had contested the elections by declaring Balendra Shah as the face of the Prime Minister.
RSP President Ravi Lamichhane, senior leader Balendra Shah, Vice President DP Aryal and Swarnim Wagle held a meeting and decided the date of the oath taking program. The party said that before the PM's oath, the Federal Parliament Secretariat has scheduled the swearing-in of MPs on March 26. RSP will form the government soon after this.
Federal Parliament Secretariat spokesperson Ekram Giri said that the new Parliament building under construction is not yet completely ready, due to which the swearing-in ceremony will be held in a temporary hall. He informed that the work of installation of microphones, lighting arrangements and other necessary infrastructure at the venue is being done at a very fast pace.
Nepal Election Commission on Thursday presented the final results of the general elections to President Ramchandra Paudel, formally concluding the election process. The House of Representatives elections were held on March 5, 2026, in which voting was held for the 275-member lower house (House of Representatives). Out of 275 members of the House of Representatives, 165 members are elected by direct voting and 110 members are elected by proportional voting.
According to a statement issued by the Election Commission, Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari presented the results to President Paudel at a special ceremony held at the President's Office at Sheetal Niwas.
Expressing satisfaction over the successful completion of the elections, President Paudel said that despite difficult and complex circumstances, they were conducted with dedication and honesty. He said that the Commission has successfully fulfilled its constitutional responsibility by conducting the House of Representatives elections on March 5 in a free, fair and fear-free environment.
In the lower house, RSP has got 182 seats, Nepali Congress 38 seats, CPN-UML 25, Nepali Communist Party 17, Shram Sanskriti Party seven and Rashtriya Prajatantra Party five seats. The party had declared Balendra Shah as its prime ministerial candidate during the election campaign. Shah is known here as Balen.
After the crushing defeat in the recently held general elections in Nepal, Nepali Congress President Gagan Thapa resigned from the post. In the House of Representatives elections in the country, Nepali Congress (NC) got 38 seats, while its slogan was, this time 100 crossed. The party had declared Gagan Thapa as its prime ministerial candidate but he lost to Rashtriya Swatantra Party (RSP)'s Amresh Singh from Dhanusha-4 constituency.
According to media reports, Thapa submitted his resignation to National Parliament Deputy Speaker Vishwa Prakash Sharma soon after the date of the party's Central Working Committee meeting was fixed. The party has not made Thapa's resignation public. A party official was quoted as saying, a meeting of the Central Working Committee has been called on March 20 (today), in which the resignation of the President will be formally discussed.
