Authorities in Spain announced on Friday that the death of James Gracey, a 20-year-old student from the University of Alabama, is likely not the result of foul play. His body was discovered in the waters near Port Olímpic in Barcelona on Thursday. According to the Mossos d'Esquadra police, preliminary indications suggest it was an accidental death. An autopsy is scheduled, but the final results may take several weeks. The identification of Gracey occurred shortly after divers retrieved his body from about 13 feet of water, close to the location where he was last seen days prior.
Gracey, known as Jimmy, had traveled to Barcelona to visit friends studying abroad. He was last spotted leaving the Shôko nightclub around 3 AM on Tuesday. After becoming separated from his friends, he did not return to their Airbnb, located approximately two miles away in Ronda de Sant Pere. A witness later reported seeing him heading towards the rocky coastline near the club, suggesting he may have accidentally fallen into the sea and drowned. On Wednesday, his wallet was discovered floating near Somorrostro beach, which is just a short distance from the nightclub. The following day, a worker at Port Olímpic alerted authorities, leading to the recovery of his body. Divers entered the water with a stretcher and returned with a body bag, while a blue screen was set up to shield the area from onlookers. Gracey's father had traveled to Spain to assist in the search for his son.
Gracey was a junior at the University of Alabama, hailing from Elmhurst, Illinois. He held the position of chaplain for the Alpha Phi Chapter of the Theta Chi Fraternity. Mike Mayer, the CEO of Theta Chi, described him as a young man of profound faith who genuinely cared for others. Chapter president Cavin McLay reflected on Gracey's positive influence, stating, "He was always inquiring about others' well-being and was a source of light in our chapter. I can confidently say that I am a better person for having known him," adding that Gracey was a "role model" and a "warrior of Christ."
The Gracey family released a statement expressing their grief over the loss. "Jimmy was a deeply loved son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend, and our family is struggling to come to terms with this unimaginable loss," they shared. He was only 20 years old and had gone to visit friends, but tragically, he never returned.
