Through the DarkSword attack, hackers are stealing users' personal data from their iPhones.

In its advisory, Apple noted that iPhone users running on iOS 13 or iOS 14 software face the highest risk from this attack. The company also stated that iPhones running on newer software versions—ranging from iOS 15 through iOS 16—are not at significant risk from this spyware.

To protect users with older iPhones from this spyware attack, Apple has released a specific software update. The company clarified that it rolled out a special software update for iOS 15 and iOS 16 on March 11. This update will provide security to those iPhone users who are unable to install the very latest iOS updates.

What is DarkSword Spyware?
DarkSword is a type of spyware designed to exploit specific bugs present within Apple's iOS. In its report, security firm Lookout described this malware as highly advanced, noting that it resembles a professional-grade platform. High-level programming languages were utilized in the creation of this "exploit kit." Furthermore, there are indications that AI tools (specifically Large Language Models—LLMs) were employed to make its functionality even more potent. Researchers state that they are tracking this spyware under the designation UNC6353.

What Should Apple Users Do?
For iPhone users who are unable to install the absolute latest software updates, the company has recently released a specific update. Users can install this update on their devices. Additionally, Apple has urged its users to keep their iPhone software up to date. The company has also warned users against clicking on unknown or malicious links, as doing so could lead to data theft.

Keep Lockdown Mode Enabled
Apple has advised users of older iPhones to keep Lockdown Mode enabled to protect themselves against spyware attacks. This mode safeguards users running older software versions from such attacks. Additionally, the company states that it will soon release a 'Critical Security Update' for users running iOS 13 or 14. Apple also notes that 'Apple Safe Browsing' is enabled by default in its web browser, Safari, which helps keep users safe by blocking malicious links.
