In December last year, during the IPL 2026 mini-auction held in Dubai, Australian all-rounder Cameron Green made headlines when the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) acquired him for a staggering ₹25.20 crore. This deal marked him as the most expensive player in IPL history.

KKR sought a replacement for Andre Russell, who had been released prior to his retirement from the IPL. Green's all-round capabilities made him an ideal candidate to fill the gap left by Russell.

Intense Bidding for Green

The 26-year-old was highly sought after during the auction, sparking fierce bidding wars among KKR, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Rajasthan Royals. Ultimately, KKR secured his services, demonstrating their commitment to enhancing their all-rounder strength for the upcoming IPL season.

Concerns Over Bowling Capacity

Despite the hefty investment in Green, questions arise regarding his ability to bowl four overs in every match. Following a serious back injury, he has limited his bowling, often being utilized sparingly by Australia across formats.

During the Ashes 2025-26, he bowled only 61.5 overs across nine innings, averaging around 6.5 overs per innings. In the T20 World Cup 2026, he bowled just 3.1 overs in five matches.

This limited bowling performance has raised doubts about his capacity to fulfill his role in the IPL. Former Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin expressed concerns about whether Cricket Australia would allow Green to bowl his full quota in the IPL.

Ashwin's Proposal for Contract Adjustments

With uncertainty surrounding Green's bowling capabilities, Ashwin proposed a radical idea for the IPL. He suggested that if players cannot bowl their full quota, franchises should have the right to adjust their contract values accordingly.

He emphasized that teams invest significantly based on expectations, and any limitations on a player's role should come with accountability. Ashwin stated, "If you bowl only 2 overs, I will deduct INR 2 crore from your contract fee."

He further elaborated that if KKR invested ₹25 crore in a player who can only bowl one over, it would be a significant concern for the franchise.

Green's Role in KKR's Strategy

Interestingly, Cameron Green has listed himself as a batter rather than an all-rounder, leading to speculation about his focus on batting over bowling. Additionally, due to new IPL regulations, he will not receive his full salary, as overseas players' earnings are capped at INR 18 crore.

As KKR aims for their fourth IPL title, they must strategically manage Green's role to maximize his impact, whether as a top-order batter or a limited bowling option.

Cameron Green's IPL Performance

Throughout his IPL career, Cameron Green has scored 707 runs, including one century and two fifties, with an average of 41.58 and a strike rate of 153.69 across 29 matches. With the ball, he has taken 16 wickets at an average of 41.50 and an economy rate of 9.07.
