As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 approaches, former all-rounder Irfan Pathan has highlighted that this season will serve as a significant learning opportunity for the emerging batting talent, Vaibhav Suryavanshi. With various teams scrutinizing his gameplay, Suryavanshi's performance will be under close observation.

The Rajasthan Royals (RR) are set to kick off their IPL journey against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), a five-time champion, starting March 30 in Guwahati. Suryavanshi, an ICC Under-19 World Cup winner, is expected to play a pivotal role in RR's quest for the title. He has already made headlines by becoming the youngest player to secure an IPL contract at just 13 years old, prior to the 2025 season.

Pathan Discusses Suryavanshi's Challenges

During a segment on JioHotstar's 'TATA IPL: Out or Out of the Park', Pathan elaborated on the challenges Suryavanshi will face this season. He noted that after showcasing his skills across various formats, opponents are now analyzing his strengths and weaknesses closely.

"This IPL season will be a crucial learning phase for Vaibhav Suryavanshi. He has gained experience from last year's tournament, participated in domestic cricket, and excelled in all formats. His performance in the Under-19 World Cup and the Ranji Trophy with Bihar has been impressive, and bowlers are now studying his gameplay to find ways to counter him," Pathan remarked.

Aiming to Elevate His Game

Pathan emphasized that the 14-year-old left-handed batsman must focus on enhancing his skills and addressing his weaknesses. Given his recent success, Suryavanshi is likely to be brimming with confidence and eager to make a statement.

"He has consistently scored centuries across different formats. Achieving this level of performance not only in the IPL but also in domestic and Under-19 matches boosts his confidence. This season, bowlers will come prepared with strategies, and Vaibhav will aim to prove himself by scoring big runs, potentially hitting another century in the IPL. Consistent scoring will indicate that he has truly advanced his game," he concluded.

U19 World Cup Achievements

In the recent U19 World Cup, Suryavanshi emerged as the second-highest run-scorer, amassing 439 runs in seven matches with an impressive average of 62.71 and a strike rate of 169.49. His performance included a century and three fifties, with a top score of 175. Notably, he set a record by hitting 30 sixes, surpassing the previous record of 18 sixes held by South Africa's Dewald Brevis from the 2022 edition. He is also recognized as India's leading run-scorer in U19 ODIs, with 1,412 runs in 25 innings at an average of 56.48, including four centuries and seven fifties.

A Record-Breaking Start

Since his debut in October 2024, Suryavanshi has been on an upward trajectory, first gaining attention with a remarkable 58-ball century for India U19 against Australia U19 in Chennai, marking the fastest century by an Indian U19 player in Youth Tests. During the IPL mega auction before the 2025 season, he secured a contract worth Rs 1.1 crore with Rajasthan Royals, making him the youngest player in IPL history.

Dominance Across Formats

At just 14 years old, Suryavanshi became the youngest T20 centurion during an IPL match against the Gujarat Titans and was the first Indian to achieve the fastest IPL fifty. He began his IPL career with a six on his first ball, finishing the season with 252 runs in seven innings, averaging 36.00 and boasting a strike rate of 206.55, including a century and a fifty. His record-breaking feats continued with a 52-ball century against England, a 61-ball 108 in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and an 84-ball 190 in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, establishing him as a formidable talent across all formats.
