Deep Look: Perfect March Madness Brackets Shrink Dramatically After First Round

The dream of completing a perfect March Madness bracket is already slipping away for nearly everyone, with only a few hundred flawless entries surviving after the NCAA Tournament’s opening round.

Despite a first round largely dominated by higher-seeded teams, the number of perfect brackets has plunged dramatically. Out of more than 26 million submissions in ESPN’s bracket challenge, only 195 remained unblemished after the first set of games. That means more than 99.999% of participants have already seen their predictions fall apart.

A similar trend played out in the NCAA’s official bracket challenge, where just 234 entries remained perfect. Even a relatively predictable start to the tournament wasn’t enough to keep most brackets intact, underscoring just how difficult it is to forecast every game correctly.

The challenge is rooted in staggering mathematical odds. Picking all 63 games correctly is considered one of the most difficult feats in sports prediction. Experts estimate the odds range from roughly 1 in 9.2 quintillion for random guesses to about 1 in 120 billion for more informed picks. Even the most knowledgeable fans face near-impossible chances.

Interestingly, the women’s NCAA Tournament has proven slightly more forgiving so far. After Friday’s games, more than 675,000 perfect brackets remained in ESPN’s women’s challenge. Still, over 2 million entries had already been eliminated, showing that perfection remains elusive across both tournaments.

The high stakes have also captured the attention of prediction markets and bettors. Kalshi, a platform that allows users to trade on event outcomes, is offering a staggering $1 billion prize for anyone who successfully predicts every game. As an added incentive, a $1 million prize will go to the participant with the highest-scoring bracket overall.

At the start of Friday’s games, 83 participants still had a shot at that billion-dollar prize. By the end of the day, that number had shrunk significantly, reinforcing the tournament’s reputation for unpredictability.

March Madness isn’t just about brackets — it’s also a major driver of sports betting. The American Gaming Association estimates that a record $3.3 billion will be legally wagered on this year’s men’s tournament. The event rivals the Super Bowl in betting activity, making it one of the most lucrative periods for sportsbooks.

One of the defining features of March Madness betting is the popularity of underdogs. Even though higher seeds have performed well in recent years, bettors often gravitate toward potential Cinderella stories. This trend reflects both the excitement of the tournament and the cultural appeal of unexpected upsets.

That dynamic was on full display when 16th-seeded Siena briefly surged ahead of top-seeded Duke during their matchup. As Siena built a double-digit lead, bets poured in on the possibility of a historic upset. However, Duke ultimately rallied to secure the win, benefiting sportsbooks that had taken in underdog wagers.

While Duke advanced, its shaky performance had immediate consequences in the betting market. The Blue Devils entered the tournament as favorites to win the championship but slipped in the odds after their close call. Arizona moved into the top spot among bettors, followed by Michigan, with Duke falling to third.

Large wagers have also been placed on several contenders. According to BetMGM, bets of $50,000 have been made on Arizona and Houston to win the title, while another bettor placed $100,000 on Purdue to reach the Final Four. These high-stakes bets highlight the intense interest surrounding the tournament.

Meanwhile, the women’s tournament continues to gain momentum, both in viewership and betting activity. The growing popularity of the women’s game has been fueled in part by standout players like Caitlin Clark, whose impact has drawn new audiences. Increased accessibility, including the ability to watch every game, has also contributed to the surge in interest.

As the tournament progresses, the number of perfect brackets will continue to shrink — likely to zero. History suggests that no one will successfully predict every game, but that hasn’t stopped millions from trying.

In the end, the rapid collapse of perfect brackets serves as a reminder of what makes March Madness so compelling: its unpredictability. Even when favorites dominate, the margin for error is razor-thin, and a single unexpected result can shatter even the most carefully crafted predictions.
