A bakery in Sarawak, Malaysia, is drawing attention for selling its signature Kek Lapis Sultan cake at RM1,800 (US$460) for a 5kg tray, about six times the usual price.

The cake was created by 38-year-old baker Adhar Brahim of Abg K’ju Cake House, who told the South China Morning Post that he spent close to a year refining its recipe and flavour combinations.

Adhar said the price reflects the use of high-end ingredients and the meticulous production process.

“In terms of ingredients, technique and preparation time, everything is at a premium level. Each layer is crafted with extreme care to ensure the texture and taste are perfectly balanced,” he said.

He said each tray takes over 8 hours to complete as every layer must be baked individually while maintaining precise temperature and timing to ensure a consistent texture.

“My creation is more than just a cake; it is a work of art,” he added.

The bakery only produced 200 trays of the cake to maintain exclusivity. Smaller portions are also available, including half trays priced at RM910, loaf sizes at RM310, half-loaves at RM160, and bite-sized pieces for RM9.50 each.

A promotional video of the cake, showing parts of the baking process, attracted thousands of comments on social media, with many users questioning its high price.

“The cake’s salary is higher than an engineer,” one user wrote.

“Even the Sultan of Brunei would think twice,” another said.

Adhar said he was not bothered by the criticism online.

“Some joke that I want to get rich quickly. But regular customers do not mind paying for it,” he said.
