Coronation Street viewers are convinced they've worked out the identity of Will Driscoll's mother - and she may be a recognisable face to numerous fans.

Will (Lucas Hodgson-Wale) arrived on the ITV soap last year, relocating from Hull to Weatherfield alongside his family: father Ben (Aaron McCusker), grandmother Maggie (Pauline McLynn), brother Ollie (Raphael Akuwudike) and Ben's partner Eva Price (Catherine Tyldesley), who made her return following a seven-year absence.

Yet it subsequently emerged that Will was being groomed by his athletics coach Megan (Beth Nixon), who also relocated to Weatherfield to maintain their relationship.

Having secured a teaching position at Weatherfield High, Megan also began a romance with Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard) - much to Will's frustration and envy.

Megan subsequently fell pregnant, disclosing to Will that he is the father - with the pair scheming to flee together. Yet the truth has ultimately emerged, with Will's family resolute in ensuring Megan faces consequences for her actions, reports the Daily Star.

During this week's episodes, Ben telephoned his former partner and Will's mother, Mel, to inform her about the ordeal. Mel hasn't yet appeared on the soap, though it was evident she was livid with Ben during their telephone conversation regarding what Will has endured.

However, following the reference to Mel, viewers can't help but suspect they already recognise who she is, with a fresh fan theory proposing she might actually be a former cobbles resident. "Who else thinks Will's mum will turn up," pondered one individual on a Coronation Street Facebook fan page. Someone else contributed: "She's called Mel but that's all we know at the moment."

A third then proposed she could be none other than former resident Fiona Middleton (Angela Griffin). The fan commented: "What if she's actually Fiona Middleton remember her from the 1990s?"

Another individual concurred: "I would so love this. It would be a good way to bring her back." A fifth remarked: "Yep, they can easily retcon a few things to make it work tbh." A sixth joked: "Probably given her a fake name because she was in witness protection or something!"

Fiona made her first appearance on the soap back in 1992 and featured in 250 episodes as Coronation Street's first major black character. The character was romantically involved with Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) and conducted an affair with his father Jim (Charlie Lawson) before departing in the autumn of 1998.

Years afterwards, in 2019, she made a short return when she disclosed Steve was the biological father of her daughter Emma Brooker.

Coronation Street airs Monday to Friday at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX
