Overview of New Cancellation Policies

Major updates are on the horizon regarding train ticket cancellation policies. If a ticket is canceled within 8 hours of the train's scheduled departure, no refund will be provided. For cancellations made between 8 and 24 hours prior, a 50% deduction from the fare will apply. Cancellations made between 24 and 72 hours in advance will incur a 25% deduction. However, if the cancellation occurs more than 72 hours before departure, the previous refund rules will still apply. Additionally, passengers can now cancel offline tickets from any location, a change from the previous rule that limited this option to the terminating station. Moreover, travelers can update their journey details up to 30 minutes before the train leaves.

Furthermore, passengers now have the flexibility to change their boarding station up to 30 minutes before departure, which is particularly beneficial for those caught in traffic or delays. This feature was previously restricted to before the reservation chart was created, but it has now been digitized for easier access. Additionally, travelers can modify their travel class if needed, such as upgrading from Third AC to Second AC or downgrading to Sleeper Class.

**Previous Cancellation Rules**

Under the old system, cancellation fees varied based on the timing of the cancellation. If a ticket was canceled more than 48 hours before departure, only a flat fee was charged: ₹240 (plus GST) for Executive Class and ₹180 (plus GST) for AC Class tickets. Cancellations made between 48 and 12 hours before departure incurred a 25% deduction of the fare (with a minimum charge). For cancellations between 12 and 4 hours, 50% of the fare was deducted. If a ticket was not canceled within 4 hours of the scheduled departure, no refund was issued.

For waitlisted tickets, a nominal fee of ₹20 plus GST was charged. If the ticket remained fully waitlisted after the reservation chart was prepared, it would be automatically canceled, and the full amount refunded without deductions. A full refund could also be claimed by submitting a TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt) in cases where the train was completely canceled or delayed by over 3 hours.
