Malayalam films are breaking the barriers of conventional storytelling. From the experimental horror-drama Bramayugam, starring Mammootty, to the nuanced family drama Ullozhukku, featuring Parvathy Thiruvothu and Urvashi, the movies have redefined narrative boundaries with their bold themes, layered characters, and rooted plot twists. Now, another Malayalam film, titled Masthishka Maranam, is making the right noises, ever since it hit the silver screens on February 27. Now, the science fiction film, headlined by Rajisha Vijayan and Niranj Maniyanpilla, is headed for an OTT release.
Rajisha Vijayan recently dropped a post on Instagram, announcing that Masthishka Maranam will be premiering on Netflix soon. Although the release date of the Krishand-directed movie is yet to be announced, the news has left fans excited.
Masthishka Maranam’s plot
Thanks to Krishand’s unique vision and the power-packed performances by Rajisha Vijayan and Niranj Maniyanpilla, Masthishka Maranam stands out as a strikingly imaginative story set in a dystopian future, more specifically, Neo Kochi of 2046. The film blends cyberpunk aesthetics with a streak of dark humour, crafting a fresh and haunting narrative around grief and memory.
Masthishka Maranam revolves around a father, Bimal, who is unable to come to terms with his daughter’s death. But, on the other hand, his wife chooses to erase all traces of their child from her mind. Bilmal, however, refuses to accept the loss and instead resorts to experimenting with near-death experiences. During one such session, he unexpectedly enters the memories of an actress, where he becomes a witness to a chilling and mysterious murder.
Niranj Maniyanpilla plays the role of Bimal and Rajisha Vijayan is seen as the superstar actress in Masthishka Maranam. The film also has notable performances from Jagadish, Zhinz Shan, Divya Prabha, Rahul Rajagopal, Suresh Krishna, and Vishnu Agastya.
Last month, in a conversation with OTT Play, Krishand shared some key details about Masthishka Maranam. The director revealed that the story is replete with themes of consumerism and capitalism, which he claimed would be at their peak in 2046 in Kochi. Krishand added that since the story is of a youth, around 32 or 34 years of age, who lives in a vertical slum-like area, Masthishka Maranam’s team shot some of the scenes in Hong Kong’s famous high-rise, monster buildings to create the exterior of vertical slums.
