Residents have said it's a "loss to the community" as a family-owned butcher announced its closure after 88 years in business. HWJ Pargiter Butchers on the corner of Haines Road and Euston Road, in Far Cotton, Northampton, has announced its impending closure.

It is currently run by Mark John Pargiter, who is a 3rd-generation owner. The butcher shared a statement on the closure on its Facebook page, prompting sad and supportive responses from loyal customers.

"WJ Pargiter Butchers would like to make you aware that the shop will be closing down on Friday, 17th April 2026," the statement reads. The butcher revealed that normal trading will continue until Easter Sunday (April 4), followed by the running down of stocks. Orders will be completed by April 17. They then advised customers to place orders now if they still want them to be fulfilled.

"The Pargiter family would like to thank all our loyal customers for their support over the last 88 years of trading," the statement continued.

"My grandfather started the shop in 1938, and Dad took over in 1962.

"I have worked on and off over the years and finished working the last 25 years with him. Thank you for your custom.

"Going forward, I will be continuing to produce some sausages and burgers. More details will be posted to this page. Please speak to me for any further information on ordering and distribution."

The business did not share the reasons for its closure. It comes as recent data suggests butcher shops are disappearing across the UK.

According to a recent analysis by The Mail, more than 20 local authorities have five or fewer butchers and abattoirs, figures described as "damning". Meanwhile, more than 1,000 butchers and abattoirs have closed across the UK.

Locals took to the comments section of HWJ Pargiter Butchers' post to share their reactions. One commenter said: "My first memories are being sent to get potted meat or 2 ounces of dripping for my Gran 60 years ago. I've been popping in ever since."

Another shared: "Oh Mark we are gutted, the best butchers by far. I really do wish all of you the very best, thank you for our little catch up chats. Good luck."

A third wrote: "One of the few proper Butchers shops. Knowledgeable old fashioned service and excellent meat selection. Sad news."

"Sad to hear this Mark. Thank you so much to you and your family for the fantastic quality produce and advice over the years. Wishing you all the best for your future ventures," said another.
