Airtel Africa has announced the successful testing of data and messaging services using Starlink Mobile, in partnership with SpaceX. The focus of the trial was to provide connectivity in areas lacking terrestrial mobile network coverage. This partnership between the two companies marks a significant step toward expanding coverage beyond traditional network infrastructure.
4G Smartphones Connect Easily to Satellites
According to Airtel Africa, standard 4G smartphones were able to connect seamlessly to Starlink's satellite constellation during the testing phase. A network of over 650 satellites helped bridge the connectivity gap in locations where providing service via traditional mobile networks is typically challenging. The company stated that this testing demonstrated how connectivity can be extended even to "zero-coverage" areas without relying on ground-based network infrastructure.
**User Capabilities During Testing**
During the trial, customers were able to access light data applications. This included WhatsApp calling and messaging, as well as communication via platforms such as Facebook Messenger. Users were also able to perform financial transactions using the Airtel app. This demonstrated that essential communication and digital services can remain operational even in areas where mobile network signals are absent.
Airtel Africa stated that it is utilizing the insights gained from this successful testing phase to prepare for the expansion of services across 14 markets. However, any subsequent rollout will be contingent upon country-specific regulatory approvals. The company noted that this initiative is part of a broader strategic focus aimed at ensuring that customers remain connected, regardless of their location.
