Potterheads around the world have been given a reason to look forward to Christmas this year after the first teaser of the new Harry Potter series reboot dropped on Wednesday, along with the announcement of its release date.

Set in the wizarding world of J.K. Rowling’s beloved fantasy novels, the series is a full reboot, described as longer and more detailed than the original film adaptations.

The teaser introduces a bespectacled Harry, played by Dominic McLaughlin, showing his early struggles as he faces bullying at home and school. His life takes a turn when he receives his admission letter from Hogwarts, leading him to join the renowned school of witchcraft and wizardry.

The trailer also features glimpses of Harry shopping with Hagrid, played by Nick Frost, and traveling on the Hogwarts Express with Ron and Hermione, portrayed by Alastair Stout and Arabella Stanton respectively.

The first season, set to stream on HBO Max from December 25, will be based on the first book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Each subsequent season is expected to adapt one book from the seven-part series, with the complete project projected to span a decade.

Fans are expected to welcome the more detailed storytelling, particularly as the original films left out several plotlines and details from the books.

The series will be directed by Mark Mylod, known for his work on Succession, Game of Thrones, and The Last of Us. Francesca Gardiner will serve as the showrunner.

Acclaimed composer Hans Zimmer, known for his work on Interstellar, is set to create the score for the series.

Rowling is also serving as an executive producer on the project, though her involvement has drawn mixed reactions. Actor John Lithgow, who plays Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore, revealed he had considered stepping away from the project due to controversies surrounding the author’s views. Nick Frost also distanced himself from Rowling, stating that while she is entitled to her opinions, they do not align with his own.
