A bun rieu (crab noodle soup) eatery in Hanoi that was forced to shut down following hygiene complaints from a Chinese tourist has reopened at a new location with major upgrades.

The restaurant, now at 47 Hang Luoc Street, has reorganized the dining area, upgraded its kitchen and installed air conditioning to address the man’s complaints about “damp and unsanitary conditions.”

Owner Duc Thang described the complaint as “unfortunate,” attributing it in part to the humid conditions typical of the north.

“On days like that, many restaurants are affected, but foreign customers may not understand and perceive it as unsanitary. Some people who never even visited also left negative comments after seeing the images.”

On March 3 a man known only as Wang wrote on Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu that conditions were “unhygienic” and posted photos of a trash-filled serving area and a wet floor.

The post quickly drew the attention of Chinese netizens, who expressed concern.

Since opening at the new venue on March 19 the eatery has been fully booked most of the time.

It sells a bowl of crab noodle soup at VND25,000-80,000 (US$0.95-3.04), depending on the toppings.
