Former Nepal PM KP Sharma Oli’s health deteriorated after arrest, admitted to Kathmandu hospital

With the formation of the new government after the change of power in Nepal, PM Balen Shah has come into action. In the meeting of the newly formed cabinet held on Friday, March 27, 2026 under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shah Balen, it was decided to immediately implement the report of the commission constituted to investigate the incidents to the Genji movement and today, while implementing it, former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli was arrested on Saturday morning.

Police detained former PM Oli from his residence in Bhaktapur and brought him to District Police Range Kathmandu. After the arrest, Oli’s health deteriorated after which he was taken to the hospital for medical examination. He has been admitted to the capital Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital. Let us tell you that Oli has earlier undergone kidney transplant. Nepali Congress leader and former Home Minister Ramesh Lalkar has also been arrested in the same case, from his residence in Katunje of Suryavinayak Municipality of Bhaktapur district.

There was large-scale violence in the Gen-Ji protests in which many people lost their lives.

Oli’s arrest is said to be to the Gen-Ji protests that took place last year. It is noteworthy that during the Zenji protests, there was large-scale violence in Nepal, in which 77 people died and there was massive damage to property. The commission of inquiry to investigate this movement considered it a case of criminal negligence and recommended action.

The inquiry commission had recommended action against Oli

It is noteworthy that the inquiry commission led by former judge Gauri Bahadur Karki had in its report recommended action against many senior officials including KP Sharma Oli. After this, Prime Minister Balen Shah decided to implement this report in the very first cabinet meeting. On the basis of this, the police issued arrest warrant and arrested KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, it is believed that more arrests will be made in this case.

Oli supporters are saying revenge action, government said justice has started

On the other hand, Nepal’s politics has heated up after the arrest of former Prime Minister and former Home Minister, Oli’s supporters are calling it an act of revenge. Pradeep Gyawali, close to Oli and CPN-UML leader, says that this action of the government is a conspiracy to target their leader. On the other hand, Home Minister of the newly formed government, Sudan Gurung, posted on the social media platform Facebook and wrote, ‘No one is above the law, we have arrested former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, this is not revenge on anyone, this is just the beginning of justice. I am confident that now the country will take a new direction.
