Nowadays, increasing addiction towards screens among children has become a matter of serious concern. Mobiles, TV and tablets have now become an integral part of their lives, which are having a negative impact not only on their eyes but also on their heart health. A recent study has made this danger more clear. In this research, it was found that excessive screen time can increase the risk of problems like high blood pressure, increased cholesterol and insulin resistance in children.
According to research, the more time children spend in front of the screen, the more their risk of heart- problems increases. These include conditions like high blood pressure, increased cholesterol and insulin resistance. The study also observed that its effect is more severe on young children, because their bodies are in the developmental stage. Additionally, getting enough sleep can reduce the negative effects of screen time. The study was conducted by analyzing data from more than 1,000 children and adolescents.
This does not mean that children should be kept away from screens completely, because in today’s time this is almost impossible. But parents should ensure how much time children are spending on screens. Providing periodic breaks, encouraging outdoor play, and ensuring good sleep can help maintain children’s heart health.
Reducing children’s screen time can be a challenge. Many children watch mobile phones or TV even while eating. But there is nothing to worry about. You can reduce children’s screen time with some simple methods.
Set boundaries gradually: Turning off the screen suddenly is not the right way. Make a small reduction every day (like 30 minutes) and gradually change the habit.
Make screen time a reward: Instead of giving away screen time outright, give it an opportunity to earn it. For example, allow screen use only after homework or small household work.
Have options ready: To keep children from getting bored, give them fun options like board games, painting, puzzles or outdoor games. With this, children will not get bored and it will be easy to stay away from the screen.
Be an example yourself: Children learn what they see. If you’re always on the phone, kids will do the same. Create ‘no phone time’ with family.
Define screen-free space: Make certain places in the house screen-free, like the bedroom and the dining table. This will improve sleep and provide an opportunity to spend time with family.
Keep children active: Encourage children to play outside, ride a bicycle or take a walk with the family. This will divert their attention from the screen and their health will also improve.
