New Delhi: A controversy erupted during the toss for the clash between the Mumbai Indians (MI) and the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday, March 29. Fans pointed out an unusual incident that took place during the toss, raising questions about the same.
At the toss presentation, MI skipper Hardik Pandya flipped the coin, and KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane made the call. However, after Hardik flipped the coin, the broadcaster didn’t show which side the coin had landed on. The match referee picked up the coin and declared MI the winners. Hardik then opted to bowl first after winning the toss.
While it is not known if it was a broadcast glitch or something else, several fans raised questions about the incident on social media. Many cried foul play, stating that such incidents have happened before during the Mumbai Indians’ matches in the IPL. For the unversed, a clear visual of the coin was shown after it landed during the IPL 2026 opener between the Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad on Saturday.
However, the same standard process was not followed during the toss between MI and KKR on Sunday, raising questions about the toss decision. Further adding to the confusion, the match referee was also not audible while confirming whether it was heads or tails. “The coin was not shown after the Toss in the #KKRvsMI match..Why does it always happen in Mumbai Indians matches?,” a fan wrote on social media, fueling speculation.
Hardik Pandya flicks the coins and camera moved away and didn’t show whether it was head or tail and Mumbai Indians won the toss.😂pic.twitter.com/Gg9qFHBsrZ

Rahane calls TAILS clearly.
Camera flips right as the coin lands.
Suddenly MI wins the toss.
Not bad camerawork – this is toss fixing.
