On Thursday, Google announced two major updates to its Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered "Live" features. The tech giant is now expanding "Search Live" globally, enabling users to obtain accurate answers to their search queries using the Gemini assistant. Additionally, "Gemini Live"—the real-time conversational experience available within the Gemini app—is also receiving an upgrade and will now run on the Gemini 3.1 Flash Live AI model. This new model introduces several improvements, such as faster and smarter responses, as well as fewer interruptions during conversations.

Google Focuses on Its AI-Based Live Products
In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), the tech giant announced the upgrade to Gemini Live and provided further details regarding it. Previously, Gemini Live operated on the Gemini 2.5 AI model. Now, by running on Gemini 3.1 Flash Live, it delivers faster responses and minimizes awkward pauses during conversations. Furthermore, Google claims that this feature will provide users with smarter responses by utilizing a "context window" that is twice as large. It is also noted that this model is capable of adapting the length and tone of its responses to suit the specific context.

Google states that this new AI model serves as a more reliable option for developers and large enterprises, enabling them to create "voice-first agents" capable of executing complex tasks at scale. Gemini 3.1 Flash Live achieved superior scores compared to Gemini 2.5 on the "ComplexFuncBench Audio" and "Audio MultiChallenge" benchmarks. These benchmarks are primarily used to evaluate multi-step function calling, the ability to follow complex instructions, and long-horizon reasoning. All audio files generated using this model are watermarked with the help of "SynthID." Notably, Search Live operates on this very same model.

Now, let's talk about Search Live: Google is currently expanding this experience—which is available within the Google app—to over 200 countries and regions, or wherever 'AI Mode' is available. It will also support all the languages that Gemini currently supports. Users can utilize this feature using both their voice and their camera. It can be activated on both Android and iOS platforms by tapping the 'Live' icon located beneath the 'Search bar'.
