Bruno Fernandes release clause and £700k-a-week offer with Man Utd stance clear

Despite being one of Manchester United's most impactful and consistent performers, Bruno Fernandes' long-term future at Old Trafford has rarely felt entirely secure. The 31-year-old, once again in superb form this season, has tallied eight goals and 17 assists in all competitions thus far. Yet despite his productivity and his strong connection with both the club and its fans, rumours over a potential exit have continued.

That sense of uncertainty was amplified during Ruben Amorim's tenure at United when reports surfaced that the club were open to a lucrative sale to Saudi Arabia, temporarily causing tension between player and club. However, with the Portugal international now back to his best and firmly in the running for PFA Player of the Year, the situation seems to have stabilised - at least for the moment.

Here's a look at the broader picture surrounding Fernandes, including the lesser-known release clause in his deal at Old Trafford.

Release clause

While Fernandes has made it clear that he wants to remain at United, the club are technically powerless to prevent him from departing.

That's because of a new £56.68million release clause in his contract, one that can only be activated by foreign clubs.

While that figure may discourage some European teams from signing a player who turns 32 in September and has little resale value, it would not be a problem for the Saudis.

Should Fernandes remain, United are anticipated to commence talks over a fresh contract, with his existing deal expiring in 2027. They do, however, possess the option to prolong it by a further 12 months.

£700k-a-week offer

Last year, it was reported that Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal were prepared to table a £100m bid to secure Fernandes, alongside a remarkable £700,000-per-week contract that would have positioned him amongst the highest earners in world sport.

With the midfielder approaching the latter stages of his career and United working to meticulously balance their finances, the club were open to authorising a sale.

With the midfielder approaching the latter stages of his career and United working to meticulously balance their finances, the club were open to authorising a sale.

However, the position did not sit well with Fernandes, who was understood to be "hurt" that United were willing to sever ties with him.

Ultimately, the offer was never formally submitted, allowing United to retain their captain but simultaneously denying them what would have been a club-record sale.

United stance made clear

Despite earlier speculation linking him with a departure, the club's position has moved decidedly towards retaining Fernandes.

While there is a continuous effort to cut the wage bill - Fernandes is collecting £300,000 a week - United remain determined to preserve their captain's impact on the field.

That stance has reportedly been relayed directly to the player in a bid to alleviate any uncertainty over his future. He is also understood to be more content since Michael Carrick assumed control in January.
