Chennai Super Kings had a tough start to their IPL 2026 campaign as they faced Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati. The team started the match badly, as they lost three players within the first four minutes of the match. Sarfaraz Khan's entry into the game occurred after the IPL's two-year absence, as the team faced the initial player loss at the start of the game. His entry into the game occurred in a strange manner, as he had not yet faced his first ball.

Sarfaraz stopped by bat rule on debut

The team faced a difficult situation at 19/3 as Sarfaraz Khan entered the game to bat at the 3.2-over mark. The on-field umpire did not let him play, as his bat did not meet the size criteria. The updated 2025 rule states that bats need to meet specific criteria on edge thickness and depth and width dimensions.

The umpire measured the length of Sarfaraz’s bat with the gauge. The process is now standard in every IPL game. The bat was deemed too long for the umpire’s gauge, and he was made to wait before he could start batting. A substitute player was sent with another bat for him. The second bat was measured before Sarfaraz could continue with his batting. The incident caused a small delay and contributed to CSK’s early woes.

A long wait ends for Sarfaraz

Sarfaraz Khan made his comeback in the IPL after a long time. His first appearance in the IPL was in the year 2015 when he played for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The team retained him because they saw the potential in him. He was unable to perform well and was given few opportunities in the coming years.

He did not feature in IPL matches in 2024 and 2025. However, his domestic cricket form earned him his return. He scored 329 runs in 7 matches in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025/26 with a strike rate of more than 200 which includes one century and three fifties.

His domestic form earned him selection in the CSK team during IPL 2026. The team selected him at his base price of 75 lakhs. The team wanted to strengthen their batting in the middle order. They had to do so since that was an area where they were lacking.

CSK struggle after top-order collapse

The batting line of CSK did not get any rhythm during their batting. This is because they lost their first wickets. Their top order could not cope with the pace attack of Rajasthan Royals. The opening bowlers put pressure on them since they could not get any rhythm.

Sarfaraz attempted to bring stability to the innings after he finally received his batting opportunity. He scored 17 runs off 12 balls but could not stay long. The umpire declared him out as lbw which marked the end of his brief inning.

CSK faced a serious challenge at one point when their score reached 70/6 after 10 overs. The young players and lower-order batters faced the challenge of rebuilding the innings for the team.

Injury concerns add to CSK worries

The biggest challenge facing CSK before the match occurred when it recorded its first loss. MS Dhoni and Dewald Brevis were unable to play in the match due to injuries. This led to severe damage to both batting and team formation.

CSK encountered major challenges during its opening match due to missing players and struggling top-order performers. The team needs to recover quickly to remain competitive in IPL 2026.

The IPL return of Sarfaraz Khan started with an unexpected situation which turned into an unplanned matter. The small moment carried extra weight because it represented CSK's difficult beginning during the match. The team needs to improve their performance because they face upcoming matches without key players and early wickets.
