In an interview with iQIYILiu said her relationship with her blood relatives has long been troubled. She said she had never received love or care from her younger sister’s family or from her biological nephew, adding that they were “worse than strangers.” She said her estate would instead be donated to a Chinese organization that supports film development, leaving nothing to her relatives.
Liu’s parents have died, and her closest surviving relatives are her younger sister and nephew. Sina reported that she once paid for her nephew to study at an elite school in Beijing and later supported his education overseas. Liu had previously said she would leave her fortune, including her Beijing villa, to him, but withdrew that decision in 2012. Her disputes with her sister’s family have continued for years.
The actress has spent more than five decades in the entertainment industry and is known for roles in Wu Zetian, The Burning of Epang Palace, Fire Phoenix, Little Flower and Hibiscus Town.
At the height of her fame in 2002, Liu was investigated over business violations and tax evasion and served 442 days in prison. Despite the scandal, she later rebuilt her career and regained her place as one of China’s leading actresses. In recent years, she has remained active in films, television dramas, short films and variety shows.
