Ron DeSantis has enacted a new law to rename Palm Beach International Airport in honor of Donald Trump, reflecting ongoing efforts to associate the former president's name with public facilities in Florida. The legislation, referred to as HB 919, received approval from state lawmakers on Monday and aims to officially designate the airport as "President Donald J. Trump International Airport." However, this change is contingent upon receiving the green light from the Federal Aviation Administration before it can take effect.
This initiative follows a previous decision by Florida officials to allocate a property in Miami for a future presidential library dedicated to Trump. The Republican Party of Florida expressed its support for the airport renaming, calling it a "landmark tribute" and stating that the state is "making it official."
If the renaming is finalized, it would place Trump's name on a significant international airport located in West Palm Beach, close to his Mar-a-Lago estate, which is situated to the east of the airport. Despite the importance of this legislation, DeSantis opted not to hold a public signing event. This decision comes as he seeks to mend his relationship with Trump after their earlier rivalry during the Republican presidential nomination race.
Eric Trump, the former president's son, commended the legislation on social media, expressing gratitude to Governor DeSantis, James Uthmeier, and state lawmaker Meg Weinberger, who sponsored the bill. The legislation passed primarily along party lines, with the Florida House of Representatives voting 81 to 30 in favor, while the state Senate supported it with a 25 to 11 vote. However, Democrats criticized the move, arguing that it detracted from more urgent issues, with Fentrice Driskell stating that Republican leaders chose to focus on renaming rather than collaborating on other legislative matters. The proposal is now pending federal approval before any official changes can be made.
