A bill seeking to formally recognise Amaravati as the sole and permanent capital of Andhra Pradesh was introduced in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, marking a significant legislative move aligned with a key demand of the ruling NDA ally Telugu Desam Party (TDP).
The proposed law is seen as a major step towards fulfilling a long-standing objective of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, while also aiming to bring clarity to the state’s capital status.
Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai introduced the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, in the Lower House.
The legislation seeks to prevent any future attempts to alter Amaravati’s status as the state’s sole capital, a shift that had been attempted under the previous government led by YSR Congress chief Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy.
After being introduced, the bill was put to a voice vote by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and was accepted.
