OpenAI has made a big advancement within the automotive industry with the release of ChatGPT for use in Apple CarPlay which marks the first time that ChatGPT has been made directly usable on a vehicle dashboard. This is being enabled through the release of Apple’s iOS 26.4 update that permits third-party “voice-based conversational apps” to operate within CarPlay.
So now, as drivers operate their vehicles, they can communicate with ChatGPT in a completely hands-free fashion via voice command rather than using their mobile devices as has previously been the norm among voice assistance products. Additionally, since ChatGPT is going to assist in helping to reduce the amount of distraction that drivers face while operating their vehicles, it increases safety for all those using the road.
However, as it currently stands, ChatGPT will be available to those customers who own Apple CarPlay-compatible vehicles. Therefore, Apple CarPlay will soon have an app for users to download and operate ChatGPT through the infotainment systems of their vehicles. This will work almost identically to the voice mode feature available on users’ smartphone devices; when they request, they will receive an immediate verbal response from ChatGPT.
Currently, however, users of Android Auto do not have the benefit of using ChatGPT, and at present time there is no indication from Google that ChatGPT will come to their platform. As AI becomes more ingrained into technology, this disparity between the Apple and Android platforms exists.
Apple has set stringent guidelines governing the behaviors of AI apps within the CarPlay interface. “Voice-driven conversation applications must have voice as their primary mode of operation on launch,” according to Apple’s developer guide.
As a result, ChatGPT will not be able to display information or imagery to the user’s in-vehicle screen; everything will take place via the spoken word: the user asks a question, and the AI will respond to the request through voice.
The interface provides only very basic components: an End option and a mute/unmute function. There is a history of conversations; however, there are no complicated menus or graphic elements to distract the user while they are operating their vehicle.
The limited user interface is not due to any technical limitations; instead, Apple has decided to design it this way. Apple requires that developers provide a simple interface and limit visual input to avoid distracting the driver from focusing on driving.
As a result of Apple’s interface minimums, the experience users will get from CarPlay will not provide as much functionality as the same app on their phone or computer and will be intended for quick requests and voice input rather than long conversations with ChatGPT.
One major downside is that to activate ChatGPT, users must manually log into the app first. There is no command or hotkey to bring up ChatGPT, so you cannot wake it up (your device must be powered on). In addition, ChatGPT does not act as Siri’s replacement, so you will continue to use Siri as your default virtual assistant.
The iPhone running iOS 26.4 or higher and ChatGPT must be installed to use the ChatGPT app on CarPlay. Once the apps have been updated, you will have access to ChatGPT through CarPlay in supported vehicles.
Apple’s app approval with its own exclusive categories for voice- apps means ChatGPT is one of a few apps using those categories, so not every app that uses AI will show up as an option on CarPlay right away; it is among the early adopters.
Although the new feature is part of Apple’s effort to use more AI in cars and throughout its other devices, Android has yet to implement ChatGPT in its Android Auto platform, thereby demonstrating that Android has far to go before using a similar feature.
