India has joined a key multilateral effort to address the escalating crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy route disrupted by the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said New Delhi has been invited by the United Kingdom to participate in discussions aimed at restoring normalcy in energy supply chains. Even as concerns mount over maritime disruptions, India has clarified that there have been no discussions with Iran regarding any toll on Indian vessels transiting the strategic waterway.

Global Talks Underway

The MEA confirmed that a high-level meeting involving 35 countries is being convened to address the situation in the Strait of Hormuz. The objective is to explore ways to reopen the vital chokepoint and stabilise global energy supplies.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri is representing India at the talks through a virtual format. Officials said the initiative seeks coordinated international action to ease tensions and ensure the uninterrupted flow of oil and gas.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India remains actively engaged in diplomatic efforts while closely monitoring developments in West Asia.

Indians Safe, Toll Denied

Responding to queries on the safety of Indian nationals in the conflict-hit region, Jaiswal said around one crore Indians reside across affected countries and are currently safe. He added that Indian missions are in constant contact with citizens and are providing necessary assistance.

However, he confirmed that eight Indian nationals have lost their lives in the conflict, while one individual remains missing. The government, he said, is fully committed to ensuring the safety of its citizens.

On concerns regarding shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, the MEA reiterated that no toll has been imposed on Indian vessels. Jaiswal clarified that there have been “no such discussions” with Iran on any levy for passage through the waterway.

India continues to keep a close watch on the evolving situation, balancing diplomatic engagement with efforts to safeguard its citizens and economic interests.
