As part of its April Fool's Day 2026 event, Pokémon Go has added Mimikyu, a Ghost- and Fairy-type Pokémon that can be caught in the game for a short time. Players have been asking for this addition for years, especially since it wasn't included in previous Halloween events.
Mimikyu can be found in the wild throughout the day, from 12am to 11:59pm, a Eurogamer report claims. This means that the Pokémon can be caught in the usual gameplay. Its shape on the in-game radar was initially believed to be a sign of an April Fool’s prank, but the release has been confirmed as part of the event.
How players can encounter Mimikyu in Pokémon Go
Players can acquire Mimikyu through various methods within the game. The most straightforward method is through wild spawns, with increased spawns from 6pm to 7pm local time during the Spotlight Hour, when it appears with Pikachu.
The Pokémon is also accessible via event-related research tasks and rewards. Another way to encounter Pokémon is through the "A Shockingly Good Time" Go Pass. Reaching the milestone of Rank 30 will grant a guaranteed encounter. However, the player must attain the milestone by April 6 at 8 pm in their local time.
To help players attain this milestone, the game has temporarily removed the daily limit on Go Points, allowing players to earn more from April 4th to 6th.
The Mimikyu release is also in line with the in-game lore for the character, as Mimikyu is traditionally known for hiding its real identity behind a disguise resembling a Pikachu. This is also in line with the Mimikyu release on April Fool’s Day.
The release date for Mimikyu differs from previous predictions within the player community, as Mimikyu is traditionally expected within Halloween updates. However, there is no information on how often Mimikyu will be available after the event.
The update adds to the game’s expanding roster, continuing its approach of introducing characters through seasonal or themed events.
