WhatsApp Blank DP Replacement Update: WhatsApp is currently testing a new profile photo replacement feature on its iOS beta version (26.12.10.71). This feature will replace the default placeholder (a blank gray icon) for contacts who have not set a profile picture (DP) or have chosen to hide it from you. Instead, the photo saved in your phone's address book or contact list will be displayed. This change will be limited solely to your device and will not affect the other person's original privacy settings.
How will this new feature work?
1. Identification Becomes Even Easier
WhatsApp's primary objective is to simplify the user experience. Often, when there are multiple contacts with the same name, it becomes difficult to identify the correct person without a profile picture; however, with the rollout of this feature, this difficulty will be eliminated. Specifically, if you have saved a friend's photo in your phone's contacts but they have not set a DP on WhatsApp, the app will display that saved photo as their profile icon.
2. Benefits in Two Key Scenarios
For Your Own Profile: If you have not set a profile picture for yourself, your settings screen will display the photo that is saved for your profile within your phone's address book. This will be visible only to you.
For Other Users: If a contact has hidden their profile picture—for instance, by setting their privacy to "Nobody"—WhatsApp can still display the photo you have saved for them in your contacts list. This will make it easier to locate and identify them within your chat list.
3. Balancing Privacy and Security
It is important to note that this feature relies on your device's local address book. It will apply only to those contacts for whom you have granted access to your address book. Most importantly, this photo will not be visible to anyone else; it is designed solely to enhance your personal user interface.
When will this feature be released?
According to a report by WABetaInfo, this feature is currently available to a select group of beta testers on iOS. Users who have installed the latest update via the TestFlight app can try it out. It is expected that it will be officially released for all Android and iOS users within the next few months.
