Meta has issued a new warning to WhatsApp users. The instant messaging platform’s parent company recently rolled out a new scam and fraud protection tool. This tool activates a warning system the moment a user’s WhatsApp account is logged into on a new device. While introducing this tool, the company issued a specific warning regarding fake versions of WhatsApp. Meta stated that hackers are targeting people using new methods. Recently, more than 200 Android and iPhone users were targeted through fake WhatsApp applications.
Warning Regarding Fake Apps
In a statement, the US tech company revealed the discovery of a fake version of WhatsApp, created by an Italian company named Asigint. Users’ devices are being targeted through this fake WhatsApp application. Consequently, users should strictly avoid downloading fake WhatsApp apps onto their phones. Cybercriminals employ social engineering tactics to ensnare people in their traps and commit fraud against them.
According to reports, users are being targeted through the use of this fake WhatsApp app. Attackers are gaining access to users’ private information and chat logs. Through this app, users’ phones can be accessed remotely, and their banking applications can be compromised. However, Meta also clarified that its internal team has thoroughly examined the official WhatsApp application and found no vulnerabilities or irregularities within it; it remains as secure as ever.
Where to Download WhatsApp?
You should always download Meta’s instant messaging app from official app stores only. Android users can download the app from the Google Play Store. However, users should ensure that the ‘Play Protect’ feature is enabled on their phones to prevent the accidental download of fake or malicious apps. iPhone users can download the official application from the Apple App Store. It is worth noting that in 2024, Apple authorized EU users to download apps on their iPhones from third-party marketplaces. Consequently, many users end up downloading fake apps onto their phones. You should always download any official app exclusively from the official App Store. Furthermore, users should refrain from opening links sent by any unknown sender, as such links may contain viruses or malware.
