The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has released the new curriculum for classes 9 through 12. Several changes have been introduced within this framework.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has released its new curriculum, incorporating several modifications. Key announcements include the phased implementation of the 'Three-Language Formula' starting from Class 6 in the 2026-27 academic session, and the introduction of a two-level system for Mathematics and Science in Class 9. Furthermore, 'Computational Thinking and Artificial Intelligence' (CT & AI) is also likely to be introduced starting from the 2027–28 academic session.
The Three-Language Formula
According to the new secondary school curriculum released by CBSE, language subjects will be categorized into three levels: R1, R2, and R3. R1 (Language 1) will serve as the student's primary language; R2 will be a distinct language; and R3 (the third language) will become mandatory starting from Class 6 in the 2026-27 academic session, with full implementation extending up to Class 10 by the 2030–31 session.
The languages selected for R1 and R2 must be distinct from one another and cannot be offered at more than one level simultaneously. The CBSE notification states: "The languages offered include India's two official languages—namely Hindi and English—along with 42 other languages. Thus, in addition to all the Scheduled Languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India, other Indian regional languages and foreign languages are also being offered."

Two-Tier System in Mathematics and Science Starting from Class 9
A two-tier system in Mathematics and Science will be implemented starting from the academic session 2026–27. All students will study the 'Standard' Mathematics curriculum, which will include a single three-hour examination worth 80 marks. Additionally, an 'Advanced' component will feature a separate paper worth 25 marks, designed to assess Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS).
This new curriculum will replace the existing 'Basic' and 'Standard' system currently in place for Mathematics. This two-tier system (Standard + Advanced) for Mathematics and Science will commence in the 2026–27 session, and the first Class 10 Board Examination under this framework will be conducted in 2028.
New Curriculum for Social Science
New textbooks will be introduced for Social Science, aligned with the 'National Curriculum Framework for School Education' (NCFSE 2023). These textbooks cover History, Geography, Political Science, and Economics, with a special emphasis on case studies, map work, and data analysis. Regarding the assessment structure, the theory paper will carry 80 marks, while 20 marks will be allotted for internal assessment.
