New Delhi: Two miscreants were detained on Thursday, April 2, after they were seen climbing a wall along a mosque and waving a saffron flag during a Hanuman Jayanti procession on Wednesday, April 1, in Delhi’s Tughlakabad area.

A Shobha Yatra associated with Hanuman Jayanti was passing through the locality at around 1:30 pm when the incident took place.

According to local media, the two men climbed onto the shed of the mosque’s wazu khana or the ablution area and waved the flag, triggering unease among residents.

A viral video of the incident shows a man with a saffron turban on top of the shed as he raises the flag, the action receiving loud cheers. On the other side, two other men can be seen doing the same, while the devotees dance to music.

Since police were deployed in large numbers on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti in Delhi, the personnel on patrol bikes detained the men on the spot.

The situation was swiftly brought under control, the police told the media.

The authorities remained on high alert throughout the day as multiple processions were taken out across sensitive areas, particularly in northwest and southwest Delhi.

“To ensure a peaceful event, a total of 13 companies of paramilitary forces were deployed, along with more than 2,200 police personnel in the area. Elaborate security arrangements, including surveillance and area domination exercises, were put in place,” an officer said.
