Ground Force had been a beloved fixture on screens throughout 1997 and 2005, as it dominated among TV's DIY and makeover shows, with a focus on British gardens. During its successful run on the BBC, its hosts Tommy Walsh, Charlie Dimmock, Alan Titchmarsh, Will Shanahan and Kirsty King travelled across the country to help transform the outdoor space of a well-deserved Brit. Garden Force was such a hit that the series also boosted sales of garden decking, so much so that retailer B&Q recorded a sharp rise from £5,000 in 1997 to £16 million in 2001.
In addition to surprising a nominated individual with the makeover, the presenters also put their own expertise to good use and proudly made over their green spaces. Tommy previously opened up about his rural home in Cambridgeshire and the efforts he put into making it a space he enjoys.
Speaking to House Beautiful, the presenter shared that his back garden is his pride and joy, then recounted a touching memory attached to the outdoor space, as Tommy confessed: "It has to be my daughter getting married in our garden.
"We've got quite a big garden for a London home, it's 100 feet long. Due to the pandemic, we had to cancel my daughter's big wedding plans. She asked me if we could do the wedding in the garden instead, so I gave it a bit of a makeover."
The BBC star detailed: "It's a split-level garden with a terrace at the bottom. We had the marquee at the top on the raised area, and the lower level was where we put the bar area and stools. Everything flowed so well.
"My daughter coming down the stairs in her wedding dress with her husband is something that will stay with me forever. It was a sensational day."
When it comes to decorating, Tommy also opened up about embracing homemade furniture. He told the outlet: "I bought a beautiful antique marble fireplace, a big one, with a cast iron insert for our main reception room.
"I had one made to match for our second reception room, which we call the piano room because it's where my wife plays the piano. That was quite a good deal.
"I also made my own coffee table, side table and dining table all out of granite and polished stainless steel to match. It's all very contemporary, but that worked out to be around 40% or 30% cheaper than if I had it made by someone else. We do a lot of entertaining, so everyone enjoys the space."
In addition to his work on Ground Force, Tommy also featured as an expert on Homes Under the Hammer, Flip That House with Tommy Walsh and currently stars on the BBC's Clean It, Fix It.
