In 2026, NASA’s Artemis II mission writes a new chapter, with astronauts traveling to the moon carrying iPhones with them. This is the first time that astronauts have included such modern smartphones in their space suits. The purpose of these iPhones is to capture important moments during missions and take high quality photos. The initiative is led by Jared Isaacman, who introduced a new policy in 2026 to allow astronauts to carry smartphones.
Artemis II is an important space mission, which will last for about 10 days. In this mission, four astronauts will travel around the moon and then return back to Earth. Although this mission will not land astronauts on the Moon, it is still an important step, as it shows that humanity is moving towards deep space again. This time the astronauts are also carrying iPhones with them along with high-tech space equipment, which reflects a new and modern approach compared to previous missions.
iPhones were selected because of their utility and superior documentation capabilities. Astronauts can now capture high-quality photos and videos using smartphones like the iPhone, allowing them to record special moments and easily document activities inside the spacecraft. In addition, astronauts are already used to using devices like the iPhone, so they do not face any difficulty in operating it.
Although the iPhone 17 Pro Max is being used in space, it is operated differently from how it is used on Earth. During missions, these smartphones are constantly kept in Airplane Mode. The reason for this is that signals emanating from smartphones can interfere with the spacecraft’s systems. Therefore they are used only as a camera and recording device.
The iPhone 17 Pro Max has the same design as the regular iPhone, but its usage is completely controlled. NASA has not yet clarified whether these phones are specially modified or are normal versions available in the market. But it is clear that small, powerful and common consumer technology is increasingly being used in space missions.
