The grandson of renowned artist Nandalal Bose, who played a significant role in illustrating the Constitution, has reported that both his and his wife's names were omitted from the West Bengal voter list following a special intensive revision of electoral rolls in preparation for the upcoming Assembly elections.

West Bengal is one of the 12 states and Union Territories where this special revision of the electoral rolls took place.

On February 28, the Election Commission released the final electoral roll for West Bengal, revealing that over 61 lakh voters had been removed from the list.

Despite this, the process is ongoing, with around 60 lakh cases still under review due to objections regarding their removal from the draft rolls published in December.

Suprabuddha Sen, aged 88, and his 82-year-old wife Deepa Sen, stated that their names were marked as 'pending' and subsequently removed after the adjudication process.

Suprabuddha Sen mentioned, “Initially, a hearing was conducted where I presented all required documents. Following this, Election Commission officials visited our residence, and I provided them with all requested information. Yet, both my wife and I have been excluded from the list.”

He also noted that their long-time domestic worker, Chakradhar Nayak, was similarly removed from the voter list.

West Bengal's Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has approached the Supreme Court regarding this issue, expressing concerns that the revision of voter rolls could lead to mass disenfranchisement of eligible voters in the Assembly elections. She has requested the court to allow elections to proceed based on the existing electoral rolls from the previous year.

The Election Commission has issued several supplementary voter lists following the adjudication process. As of April 1, the High Court informed the Supreme Court that over 47 lakh of the 60 lakh objections had been resolved.

The Assembly elections in West Bengal are scheduled to occur in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with the counting of votes set for May 4.
