Man Utd's five-step plan as eight players set to leave to fund huge transfer spend

Manchester United are poised for another transformational summer in 2026. Following Ruben Amorim's exit in January, the Red Devils will approach a transfer window under fresh management once more. Yet they seem positioned to do so from genuine strength. Michael Carrick has steadied the ship at Old Trafford since assuming an interim role. And they are now favourably placed to clinch a top-four finish and secure Champions League qualification.

Nevertheless, the gap to the leading duo of Arsenal and Manchester City remains substantial and considerable effort is required if United intend to bridge it within one summer. The playing squad is expected to be dramatically altered by the start of the 2026/27 campaign, while there is also the pending decision regarding which manager will lead them forward.

INEOS are also keen to demonstrate they have the club progressing in the correct direction under its ownership. So to assist them, we have constructed a foolproof five-step blueprint to restore United to their glory days.

1. Make the managerial decision...early

Carrick is rightfully the favourite for this and it would require a courageous call to deny him an opportunity at the permanent position, should United achieve Champions League qualification.

However, there will be alternative options to weigh up, even though the Old Trafford hierarchy have chosen to engage with no other candidates to date. Whether it's Carrick or not, the decision needs to be made swiftly. United cannot squander precious time during the summer mulling over the optimal course of action.

The dressing room evidently wants Carrick, they've made that abundantly clear. So let's deliver what they're asking for.

2. New contract for Bruno Fernandes

If there was ever a straightforward decision, this is it. Yes, he's now 31 and yes, United could command a substantial fee, but there should be absolutely no doubt whatsoever regarding Fernandes' future.

The Portuguese is the heartbeat of this United side and has arguably been the finest individual player in the Premier League this season.

The Red Devils hold all the cards, given his contract runs until 2027 with an option for a further 12 months. But let's not delay here...offer him a new long-term contract and ensure he understands precisely how vital he is.

And while we're at it, offer Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo new deals. They've earned it, and replacing them would be creating another problem where it isn't necessary.

3. Reduce the wage bill and recoup some funds

This will require some effort, but it's a task Manchester United simply must execute correctly. It is understood that a return to Europe's top competition will see players receive the 25 per cent back on their wages that were cut when they missed out.

That even includes players like Andre Onana, who have spent the season thousands of miles away from Manchester. United must therefore counteract this by offloading players who are no longer required. The club's highest-paid player, Casemiro, has already confirmed his departure upon the expiry of his contract, while Tyrell Malacia and Jadon Sancho will almost certainly follow suit.

Marcus Rashford is seeking a permanent switch to Barcelona, who will undoubtedly prove difficult negotiating partners. Rasmus Hojlund is also reportedly heading to Napoli.

Onana fancies another opportunity to reclaim the No.1 shirt, but recouping some of the initial outlay would make such a transfer worthwhile.

Recent reports indicate that Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants eight players to depart this summer, potentially including Manuel Ugarte and Joshua Zirkzee.

4. Rebuild the midfield

If 2025 was entirely focused on revamping the attacking options, 2026 is about doing likewise with the midfield. Casemiro's decision to leave has made refreshing the central options an absolute necessity.

Mainoo remains a cornerstone, but Ugarte has struggled to make his mark, meaning United could realistically do with two top-quality starting midfielders.

They won't come at a bargain price, but United require players capable of making an immediate impact. Much like Arsenal achieved when they splashed out to secure Declan Rice.

Elliot Anderson fits that profile. United will face stiff competition, but a statement of intent could be made if the England star trades the red of Nottingham Forest for the red of Old Trafford.

Carlos Baleba also remains a target. Following a disappointing campaign, he could potentially be acquired at a considerable reduction on the figures quoted twelve months ago. Joao Gomes from Wolves represents another possibility, and he may be willing to accept a lower fee given their drop down to the Championship.

5. Add depth

With several underperforming squad players departing, United will need to bolster their ranks with quality additions.

United have flourished in the league in recent months, though this comes with the caveat that their fixture list is considerably lighter than their rivals'. United were knocked out of both domestic cups at an early stage and have had no European competition to contend with.

It could be an entirely different proposition when they return to playing three matches a week. Therefore, the overall squad depth must be strengthened.

This could prove to be the most expensive aspect of the entire summer rebuild, and perhaps unrealistic to achieve in a single window. However, it cannot be ignored if United are genuinely serious about competing on multiple fronts.
