Ajay Devgn ’s ‘ Golmaal 5 ’ is set to break a long-running franchise pattern by dropping the usual romantic track for its lead character. The upcoming Rohit Shetty comedy will not feature a heroine romantically paired opposite Devgn, marking a first for the hit series. That change gives the film a new hook as production moves ahead and the makers aim to refresh a brand that has delivered crowd-pleasing comedy for nearly 20 years.

'Golmaal 5' update and franchise changeAccording to Variety, ‘Golmaal 5’ will move away from the formula followed by the earlier films. The report states, “The upcoming comedy entertainer will have no leading heroine romantically paired opposite Ajay Devgn.” It also adds, “This marks the first time a ‘Golmaal’ film will have no ‘romantic’ angle for its leading man, breaking the franchise tradition.”

Priyamani is part of the cast, but her role does not include a love story with Ajay Devgn or any of the other male actors. The report says, “Although Priyamani is in the film, she has no romantic angle with Ajay or any of the other actors.” That sets ‘Golmaal 5’ apart from every earlier installment in the series.

'Golmaal' franchise cast, box office, and release planThe earlier films all paired Devgn with a female lead. ‘Golmaal: Fun Unlimited’ from 2006 starred Rimi Sen. ‘Golmaal Returns’ and ‘Golmaal 3’ featured Kareena Kapoor Khan. ‘Golmaal Again’ from 2017 cast Parineeti Chopra as the female lead.

This time, the focus stays on the larger ensemble and a broader comic setup. Devgn returns with Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor, Kunal Kemmu, and Shreyas Talpade. Sharman Joshi also returns to the franchise. The new film adds Akshay Kumar , who is set to play a negative comic role.

The report describes ‘Golmaal 5’ as “the most ambitious chapter in the franchise yet.” It also says the film will be “bigger in scale and bolder in the madness quotient,” while expanding beyond the familiar prank-driven situational humor that shaped the earlier movies.

The ‘Golmaal’ franchise completes 20 years this year. Across four films, it has earned more than $72 million worldwide at current exchange estimates based on the reported ₹600 crore total. Shooting is already underway, with a theatrical release planned for early 2027.
