A 19-year-old British tourist died while visiting Vietnam, and her parents, despite their grief, made the decision to donate her organs to save three patients’ lives.

The case was reported by Vietduc University Hospital on April 7. The deceased, identified only as O.S.W., suffered an accident and did not survive it.

Even as they mourned their daughter, her parents agreed to donate her organs and tissues, which helped save three people with organ failure, the hospital said.

A touching video released by the hospital showed her parents embracing her body for one last time before the procedure.

Her father said: “I believe Vietnam is the place our daughter gave all her love to. Being able to give something back to this country, where she spent her final moments, is incredibly meaningful.”

Her mother added: “Our daughter had the best time here. She cherished every moment she spent in this country. This is our way of expressing our deepest gratitude to everyone here.”

A video with the caption, “A journey has ended, but her life lives on in the Vietnamese people who have been given a second chance,” drew nearly 430,000 views and more than 600 comments in just four hours, most of the latter expressing gratitude for the British family’s decision.

The story has also prompted many people to express interest in organ donation after death and to seek more information about the procedures involved.

According to the National Coordinating Center for Human Organ Transplantation, Vietnam currently has 157,565 registered organ donors while 4,323 patients are waiting for transplants.

But the actual number of organ donations following brain death remains low, at just 225 cases so far.
