One of the recent efforts towards making a huge transformation in urban transportations in Rajasthan includes the Jaipur Metro Phase-2 Project that was recently announced by the Indian on their website. As stated in the announcement, the Union Cabinet chaired by Indian Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi has approved Jaipur Metro Phase-2 project. This project is expected to develop a metro corridor covering a distance of 41 km from Prahladpura to Todi Mod. The total budget required for developing this project is INR 13,037.66 crore.

This metro project is expected to be executed by Rajasthan Metro Rail Corporation Limited, which is a Joint Venture of 50% share held by Government of India and 50% share held by Government of Rajasthan. This upcoming metro will act as an addition to the current Jaipur metro and will connect the city through a North-South Corridor. There are 36 stations proposed under this project.

Jaipur Metro Phase-2 will establish connectivity to various parts of Jaipur city like Sitapura Industrial Area, VKIA (Vishwakarma Industrial Area), Jaipur Airport, Tonk Road, SMS Hospital and Stadium, Ambabari, and Vidhyadhar Nagar. There are several underground stations planned within the Jaipur Airport zone.

The corridor will also be integrated with the existing operational Phase-1 network by means of the interchange stations and feeder systems that will connect both networks into one metro network.

Currently, Jaipur metro is running in the form of Phase-1 network. Phase-1 metro line stretches for 11.64 km in the East-West direction and covers 11 stations. The route links residential and commercial zones with the city center (historical part of Jaipur).

Nowadays, daily usage of the metro in Phase-1 is about 60, 000 people. In spite of the shortness of the line, it plays an essential role for transport movement in the city. When Phase-2 becomes operational, it is presumed that the number of people who use the metro would significantly grow because of increased coverage of the network.

The implementation of such project can considerably help in solving the problem with traffic congestion by shifting from using cars and motorcycles to the metro as a mode of transportation. Besides, the reduction of traffic will positively affect vehicular pollution reduction efforts.

Timeline and future impactThe Jaipur Metro Phase-2 corridor is scheduled to be completed by September 2031. Once operational, this metro corridor will be beneficial to a number of people, such as daily travelers, employees, and tourists who wish to visit the city.

The metro corridor will extend along the North-South route and supplement the existing East-West metro corridor, thereby ensuring connectivity throughout the city. This will mark an important step towards making Jaipur a modern city that is prepared for its future needs.

In summary, the Jaipur Metro Phase-2 is a highly commendable infrastructure project in Jaipur that will make significant contributions to improving the connectivity within the city. This will ultimately play an important part in the development of Jaipur, as well as in developing India and the state of Rajasthan as a whole.
