Tezzbuzz Desk- At the beginning of the year, a major class-action case came to light in the US against Meta, which sparked a new debate about messaging privacy. The case alleged that WhatsApp misled users by claiming end-to-end encryption, while allegedly accessing private messages was possible. However, the company has completely rejected all these allegations.

Elon Musk called WhatsApp unsafe

This controversy gained momentum when Elon Musk raised questions on the security of WhatsApp on social media platform X. Responding to a viral post, he wrote that “WhatsApp cannot be trusted.”

Not only this, Musk also appealed to the users to shift to his platform, where he claims better audio-video calling and privacy. This is not the first time Musk has targeted Meta and its platforms.

Old conflict between Mark Zuckerberg and Musk in discussion again

The old rivalry between Mark Zuckerberg and Musk has also come into limelight again with this issue. Both the tech giants have often commented on each other’s platforms and policies, making the competition in the tech industry even more interesting.

What are the allegations against WhatsApp?

The class-action lawsuit alleges that WhatsApp allows employees, contractors and certain third-party systems to access users’ messages. According to the complaint, some of Meta’s internal tools allegedly bypass encryption and review messages. However, Meta says that WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption is strong and the company gives priority to users’ privacy.

Pavel Durov also took aim

Pavel Durov also joined this debate. He criticized WhatsApp’s encryption model, saying it could amount to “consumer fraud” and alleged that user data is shared with third parties. Durov described his platform Telegram as a more secure option, although his claim has also been questioned.

Telegram vs WhatsApp: What’s the real difference?

While WhatsApp provides end-to-end encryption by default, Telegram has a different model. Telegram’s normal chats are cloud-based, that is, messages are stored on its servers.

Only the “Secret Chat” feature provides end-to-end encryption. In such a situation, the approach of both the platforms is different in terms of privacy, and users should choose the option as per their need.

Is your privacy really in danger?

These questions raised regarding WhatsApp are currently confused between allegations and answers. While on one hand giants like Musk and Durov are calling it unsafe, Meta is firm on calling its system safe.

In such a situation, it is important for the users to understand the privacy policy and features of any platform while using it, so that their digital security is maintained.
