The biggest identity of real silk is fire. Take out a small thread from the edge of the saree and burn it. If when burnt it smells like burnt hair and its ash is black and brittle, then it is real silk. On the contrary, fake silk melts like plastic and forms a lump.
Real silk is a natural fiber. When you rub it vigorously between your palms, you will feel a slight warmth there. Whereas synthetic or fake silk remains completely cool when rubbed.

The process of producing thread from silk worms is expensive and laborious. If someone is offering you pure Banarasi or Kanjeevaram silk for just Rs 1000-1500, then understand that it may be fake. Real silk feels velvety and smooth to the touch and when squeezed in a fist, it does not get wrinkled like cotton.
Put a drop of water on one corner of the silk. Real silk absorbs water quickly, whereas on synthetic fabric the water drop stays on top for a long time or slips away.
