WhatsApp is now gearing up to introduce a major and highly practical update for its users. With this new update, you will no longer need to share your phone number to chat with someone. Instead, you will be able to connect with people by creating a unique 'Username.' This means your privacy will become even more secure than before. Thanks to this feature, you can initiate a chat simply by sharing your username. According to reports, WhatsApp will roll out this feature gradually.
What are the rules for creating a Username?
WhatsApp has established specific rules for creating usernames to ensure that every user's name remains unique and secure. First and foremost, your username cannot begin with 'www,' nor can it end with '.com' or '.in,' as these formats resemble website addresses.
Furthermore, a username must contain at least one letter. This means you cannot create a username using only numbers or symbols. It allows for the use of only lowercase letters (a–z), numbers (0–9), dots (.), and underscores (_).
There are also specific guidelines regarding the length of the username; it must be between 3 and 35 characters long. Additionally, if the username you have chosen is already in use by someone else, you will be required to select a different name.
Enhanced Security with the Username Key
WhatsApp is adding another unique element to this feature, referred to as the 'Username Key.' This will be a 4-digit code that comes into play when someone attempts to contact you for the very first time.
You have the option to enable this feature if you wish. Doing so will significantly bolster your privacy, as no one will be able to contact you unless they possess both your username and this 4-digit code.
A Unified Username Across Meta Platforms?
WhatsApp may also offer you the convenience of using the same username across other Meta platforms, such as Instagram and Facebook. This would make it much easier for people to find you.
When can we expect this feature? This feature is currently in the testing phase and has been rolled out to only a select group of users who have updated to the latest version of WhatsApp. It will gradually be made available to more people.
