Even today scientists are making discoveries about the creatures found in the depths of the sea. By the way, do you know that there is a creature in this ocean which has neither a heart nor a brain! Now this question must be arising in your mind that how can this creature remain alive? Let us know about this…
We are talking about starfish, whose body works on a special type of nervous system. It does not have a brain, rather it has a nerve ring around its mouth. This nerve ring controls the activities of its entire body. Additionally, each arm has radial nerves that send signals in different directions and control touch and movement. In this way, its entire body is not operated from a single center but by the working together of many parts. This system is called Decentralized System.
Another unique feature of starfish is that there is no blood in its body. Instead, sea water keeps circulating in its body. This water is pumped into the body through a special Water Vascular System. Through this water, oxygen and essential nutrients reach different parts of its body. This system plays an important role in keeping it alive and active.
Although it does not have a brain, it is still capable of understanding the environment around it. There are small eye-like structures at the ends of each of its arms, which are called eyespots. These eyespots help in distinguishing between light and darkness. Apart from this, starfish can also feel touch and smell, which allows it to react according to its surrounding environment.

One of the most surprising abilities of the starfish is its regeneration ability. If for some reason one of its hands gets cut off, it does not lose it forever. With time she regrows that lost hand. You will be surprised to know that in some of their species, this ability is so high that a whole new body can be formed with just one hand. This quality makes it different and special from other sea creatures.
Now let's talk about its way of working. Starfish moves very slowly, but its method is very interesting. There are hundreds of small tube feet under its body. These tube feet work through water pressure i.e. hydraulic system. When water builds up pressure in these tube feet, they move back and forth, helping the starfish crawl. Due to this system it is able to move easily on the sea surface.
