iPhone-like fun will soon be available on Android! Google is working on this new feature

Google may soon bring you the Tap to Share feature, which will make it easier for Android users to share files and contact details. This feature is similar to the iPhone's NameDrop-style sharing tool, which allows users to easily transfer data by bringing two smartphones together.

This feature was first reported by Android Authority, which discovered it by scanning the Google Play Services code with input from tipster AssembleDebug. The feature in Android is expected to support multiple types of content, including contacts, photos, videos, links, and even location data.

This feature will work like this

Based on preliminary details and leaked UI elements, the tap-to-share feature in Android is designed to be simple and user-friendly. To use this feature, both Android devices must be unlocked before the transfer can begin. Users will then place the phones close together, usually with their top edges overlapping or screen-to-screen, similar to how the feature works on the iPhone. Once aligned, a soft glow animation appears on the display confirming that the devices have been successfully connected and the transfer is in progress. This visual cue plays an important role in assuring users that the process has started.

If the connection fails, users may have to try another method like placing the phones back to back. This extra step is probably necessary because unlike iPhones, the location of the NFC antenna on Android devices varies depending on the manufacturer. The overlap approach increases the chance of correct alignment between devices.

When will this feature come?

Google has not yet officially announced Tap to Share and this feature is still in development. However, based on its current state and integration into system components, it is expected to arrive with Android 17 later this year.
