Kobbie Mainoo has been ruled out of Manchester United's clash against Leeds United on Monday. The 20-year-old had started in each of United's previous 10 matches since Michael Carrick was appointed as the club's interim head coach in mid-January, impressing in a midfield partnership alongside Casemiro.
However, Mainoo will not feature against Leeds after sustaining a minor training injury. United decided it was not worth the risk of including the midfielder in the squad, with Manuel Ugarte stepping in to take his place in the XI. When quizzed about Mainoo's absence in his pre-match interview, Carrick told Sky Sports: "Over the last day or so, Kobbie just had an issue in training. So it seems small but big enough to keep him out tonight. It wasn't worth the risk, to be honest, so we're hoping it's pretty small."
Alongside Mainoo, Bryan Mbeumo, Harry Maguire and Diogo Dalot have also dropped out of the starting line-up from the 2-2 draw at Bournemouth, with Carrick making four alterations to his side.
Benjamin Sesko has been handed a starting berth up front, while Maguire's suspension has opened the door for Lisandro Martinez to make his comeback from injury, and Dalot has been replaced by Noussair Mazraoui.
Martinez's last United appearance came against West Ham on February 10, with the defender picking up an injury in the build-up to the victory over Everton later that month.
He was sidelined for five Premier League fixtures, but returned to full training last week and has been thrown straight back into the starting XI.
Mbeumo, meanwhile, withdrew from international duty with Cameroon as a precautionary measure. He participated in full training during a camp in the Republic of Ireland last week, but Carrick has named him among the substitutes for the first time.
United can stretch the gap between themselves in third and sixth-place Chelsea to 10 points with victory against Leeds - delivering a significant boost to their bid to secure qualification for next season's Champions League.
The Premier League are guaranteed five places in Europe's premier club competition, though this could rise to six should Aston Villa finish fifth and claim the Europa League title.
